Every year on 1st October, the world comes together to celebrate coffee and gives recognition to the millions of people across the world who work hard to create the beverage we all love.

Coffee has a rich and diverse history, produced in over 50 countries around the world. It has never been more popular and there have never been more ways to drink coffee: LATTES, FRAPPUCCINO, DRIP, COLD BREW, AND OF COURSE ESPRESSO to name a few. But what does it take to make a cup of coffee? To start with, there are seven stages that form the coffee making process, from bean to cup: picking, washing, drying, grading, roasting, cupping and last but not the least enjoying!

At each of these stages there are specially-trained people, each with their own expertise, who play an important role in coffee’s production. Coffee impacts so many people’s lives, for many it is a passion but for even more it is the livelihood on which they depend. The purpose of this day is to celebrate the existence of the beverage. More importantly, International Coffee Day honors the hard workers in the crop fields that grow coffee plants and harvest them for coffee companies throughout the world.

In the English language, we are used to saying “coffee” to describe the beverage that is brewed from coffee beans. However, people of other languages do not use the word “coffee” to describe this beverage. They have their own word to describe coffee. Here are some examples of how to say “coffee” in other languages. You say cafĂ© in Spanish,

Caffé in Italian, Kohi in Japanese, Café in Portuguese, Kofe in Russian, Café in French, Kaffee in German, Kaféi in Chinese, Qahwa in Arabic, Koffie in Dutch, Kaffi in Icelandic, Cafea in Romanian, Kaffe in Swedish, Kahvi in Finnish, Kaapi in South India..etc. As you can make out, the words have a similar pattern in their pronunciation.

There is plenty we can all do as individuals to reduce the impact our coffee has on the environment.
